Hommage to Modrian, Public Art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, October 2005
"Hommage to Mondrian" (8' x 8') is a multimedia mural which combines a fresco portrait, collage of photos of Mondrian's oeuvre, and acrylic hard-edged hands and shoulders. Situated at the end of a long corridor lined with lockers and painting racks, the theme of the grid continues in the composition.

Held in Mondrian's hands is his final completed painting, "Broadway Boogie Woogie". Framing the frescoed portrait are photo images of his painting as it progressed through time.
Many drawings are required to execute a fresco. At below left are all preliminary sketches, color tests in fresco and working drawings at the mural site. The large drawing to the right of the fresco includes a full size tonal study in charcoal and chalk overlaid by a simplified line drawing that was used to punch holes in the image transfer sheet (the white paper rolled above the fresco). The fresco was executed in two days, and the work in progress photo (lower right) shows Jan working on the first day's upper half of the portrait.
